Brigadier General Eleazar Arthur Paine
Born September 10, 1815 in Geauga City, OH.
Graduated from West Point in 1839.
Resigned in 1840 to pursue a law career.
Elected colonel of the 9th Illinois in July 1861.
In September 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General.
Commanded a brigade at Paducah.
Commanded 4th Division, Army of the Mississippi at New Madrid,
Island #10, Fort Pillow, and Memphis.
Commanded 1st Division, Army of the Mississippi &
District of West Kentucky.
Guarded railroads late in the war.
Resigned in April 1865.
Died on December 16, 1882 in Jersey City, NJ.
Major General John Pope
Born on March 16, 1822 in Louisville, KY.
Entered West Point at the age of 16.
Graduated 17th in a class of 56 in 1842 and assigned to the engineers.
Awarded for gallantry in the Mexican War, he was a captain by 1856.
In July 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers.
In 1862, commanded the Army of the Mississippi
at New Madrid and Island # 10.
On March 22, 1862, he was promoted to major general and
transfered to the Eastern Theater.
Defeated by Robert E Lee at Second Bull Run, he withdrew in an orderly fashion into the works of Washington. Blamed the loss on officers loyal to McClellan. President Lincoln apparently agreed, "...but there was an army prejudice against him, and it was necessary he should leave."
Campaigned in the West against Indians remaining a top commander until his retirement in 1886.

Old Soldiers' & Sailors' Home in Sandusky, OH.
